# Promotional Invoice Rules - Implementation Summary

## Overview

This document describes the complete implementation of Return & Exchange Rules for invoices with promotional offers.

## Core Rules Implemented

### 1. **Full Return Requirement for Promotional Invoices**
- Invoices with applied promotions **MUST** be returned in full
- Users cannot select partial items or modify quantities
- System automatically selects all items with full quantities
- Backend validation rejects partial return attempts

### 2. **Original Promotion Reapplication on Exchange**
- When exchanging a promotional invoice, the **original** promotion is reapplied
- Works even if the promotion is:
  - Expired
  - Deactivated
  - Unpublished
- Current/active promotions are **ignored** during exchange
- Ensures consistent pricing with original purchase

### 3. **Promotion Editing Restrictions**
- Promotions that have been used in transactions **cannot be edited**
- Only `is_active` toggle is allowed (activate/deactivate)
- Prevents historical data inconsistency
- Error message shows usage count and transaction details

## Database Changes

### Migration: `add_applied_promotions_to_invoice_header`

**Purpose**: Store array of promotion IDs applied to each invoice for historical tracking.

## Backend Implementation

### 1. **PromotionalInvoiceService** (`app/Services/PromotionalInvoiceService.php`)

**Methods**:
- `hasPromotions(InvoiceHeader $invoice): bool` - Check if invoice has promotions
- `getOriginalPromotions(InvoiceHeader $invoice): Collection` - Retrieve promotions (even if expired/deactivated)
- `validateFullReturn(InvoiceHeader $invoice, array $returnItems): array` - Validate full return requirement
- `getPromotionDetails(InvoiceHeader $invoice): array` - Get promotion info for display
- `isPromotionUsed(int $promotionId): array` - Check if promotion has been used

### 2. **SalesController** Updates

**File**: `app/Http/Controllers/User/SalesController.php`

Stores promotion IDs when creating invoices:

**`searchInvoiceForExchange()`**: Includes promotion details
**`processExchange()`**: Reapplies original promotions to new items

**New Endpoint**: `GET /api/admin/promotions/{id}/usage-status`
- Returns usage information for a promotion

**Update Restrictions**:

## Frontend Implementation

### 1. **ReturnForm.tsx** Updates

**File**: `resources/js/components/Pages/Returns/ReturnForm.tsx`

**Features Added**:
- Auto-selects all items for promotional invoices via `useEffect`
- Disables quantity controls (increase/decrease buttons)
- Shows warning banner
- Prevents manual item deselection

## Error Messages

### Return Errors
- **Partial Return Rejected**: `"This invoice includes a promotion and must be fully returned."`
- **Type**: `PROMOTIONAL_INVOICE_FULL_RETURN_REQUIRED`

### Promotion Edit Errors
- **Edit Blocked**: `"This promotion has been used in X transaction(s) and cannot be edited. You can only activate/deactivate it."`
- **Error Code**: `PROMOTION_IN_USE`

## Testing Guide

### Manual Testing

#### Test 1: Full Return Enforcement
1. Create a sale with a promotion
2. Try to return with partial items → Should reject
3. Try to return with all items but reduced quantity → Should reject
4. Return all items with full quantities → Should succeed

#### Test 2: Exchange with Expired Promotion
1. Create a promotion (e.g., 10% discount)
2. Create a sale using the promotion
3. Deactivate/expire the promotion
4. Exchange the invoice
5. Verify: Original 10% discount still applies to new items

#### Test 3: Promotion Edit Restriction
1. Create a promotion
2. Use it in a sale
3. Try to edit the promotion → Should block
4. Try to toggle `is_active` → Should allow

## Migration Instructions

## Support & Troubleshooting

### Issue: Migration Fails
**Solution**: Ensure database connection is configured and accessible

### Issue: Promotions Not Auto-Selecting in Return Form
**Solution**: Check that backend is returning `has_promotions` and `promotion_details` in the API response

### Issue: Exchange Not Applying Original Promotion
**Solution**: Verify `applied_promotions` column contains promotion IDs for the original invoice
