## 🚀 Quick Start

### Stop Current Attack (Do This First!)

**For Apache/LAMP Stack:**

```bash
# 1. Block the attacking IP
sudo nano /var/www/html/sellzaki.com/production/public/.htaccess
# Add at top:
# <RequireAll>
#     Require all granted
#     Require not ip 41.44.117.225
# </RequireAll>
# 2. Restart PHP-FPM
sudo systemctl restart php8.2-fpm
# 3. Deploy security fixes
cd /var/www/html/sellzaki.com/production
git pull origin main
php artisan cache:clear
php artisan route:clear
```

**Done!** The attack is now stopped. See [APACHE-QUICK-START.md](APACHE-QUICK-START.md) for details.

## 🔍 What Happened

### The Attack
- **IP**: `41.44.117.225`
- **Target**: `/api/products/search?q=t`
- **Method**: Rapid-fire single-character searches
- **Impact**: All 5 PHP-FPM workers exhausted → Site down
- **Duration**: Ongoing until blocked

### Why It Worked
1. No minimum search length validation
2. No rate limiting on search endpoint
3. Expensive database queries (`LIKE '%t%'`)
4. No pattern detection for abusive behavior

### The Result
- 429 errors for all users (including legitimate ones)
- `/api/auth/permissions` and other endpoints timing out
- Complete service disruption

---

## ✅ What We Fixed

### 1. **Immediate Protection**
- ✅ Minimum 2-character search requirement
- ✅ Aggressive rate limiting (10 req/min for search)
- ✅ Pattern detection for single-char searches
- ✅ Auto-blocking for repeat offenders (30 min)

### 2. **Multi-Layer Defense**
```
Firewall → Nginx → PHP-FPM → Laravel → Controller → Database
   ↓         ↓        ↓         ↓          ↓           ↓
  IP      Rate     Worker    Global    Input      Query
 Block    Limit    Pool      Throttle  Validate   Optimize
```

### 3. **Additional Improvements**
- ✅ Increased global API throttle (600 → 1200 req/min)
- ✅ Permissions included in login response (no extra call)
- ✅ Delayed tour/chat fetches to reduce initial burst
- ✅ CLI commands for manual IP management

## 🚀 Deployment

### Prerequisites
- SSH access to production server
- Sudo privileges
- Git access to repository

### Step 1: Block Current Attacker
See [IMMEDIATE-ACTIONS.md](IMMEDIATE-ACTIONS.md) - **Do this first!**

### Step 2: Deploy Laravel Updates
```bash
cd /var/www/html/sellzaki.com/production
git pull origin main
php artisan cache:clear
php artisan config:clear
php artisan route:clear
```

### Step 3: Configure Nginx (Recommended)
```bash
# Copy nginx config
sudo cp nginx-rate-limit.conf /etc/nginx/conf.d/
# Or manually add to your site config
sudo nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/sellzaki.com
# Test and reload
sudo nginx -t && sudo systemctl reload nginx
```

### Step 4: Verify
```bash
# Test rate limiting
for i in {1..15}; do
  curl "https://tyson.sellzaki.com/api/products/search?q=test" \
    -H "Authorization: Bearer TOKEN"
  echo "Request $i"
done
# Should see 429 after 10 requests
```

---

## 🧪 Testing

### Test 1: Rate Limiting
```bash
# Should block after 10 requests
./test-rate-limit.sh
```

### Test 2: Minimum Length
```bash
# Should fail (1 char)
curl "https://tyson.sellzaki.com/api/products/search?q=t" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer TOKEN"
# Should work (2+ chars)
curl "https://tyson.sellzaki.com/api/products/search?q=te" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer TOKEN"
```

### Test 3: Auto-Blocking
```bash
# Send 5 single-char searches rapidly
# Should auto-block after 4 attempts
for i in {1..5}; do
  curl "https://tyson.sellzaki.com/api/products/search?q=a"
done
```

---

## 📊 Monitoring

### Real-Time Monitoring
```bash
# Watch for abusive IPs
sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/access.log | \
  awk '{print $1}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn
# Watch Laravel logs
tail -f storage/logs/laravel.log | grep -i "suspicious\|blocked"
# Watch PHP-FPM workers
watch -n 1 'ps aux | grep php-fpm | wc -l'
```

### Daily Checks
```bash
# Top IPs from yesterday
sudo grep "$(date -d yesterday +%d/%b/%Y)" /var/log/nginx/access.log | \
  awk '{print $1}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn | head -20
# Blocked IPs count
grep "blocked" storage/logs/laravel.log | wc -l
```

### Alerts (Set These Up)
- PHP-FPM workers > 80% usage
- Request rate > 1000/min from single IP
- More than 10 auto-blocks per hour
- Response time > 1 second

---

## 🔧 Management

### Block an IP
```bash
# Temporary (Laravel)
php artisan security:block-ip 1.2.3.4 --minutes=1440
# Permanent (Nginx)
echo "deny 1.2.3.4;" | sudo tee -a /etc/nginx/conf.d/blocked-ips.conf
sudo systemctl reload nginx
```

### Unblock an IP
```bash
# Laravel
php artisan security:unblock-ip 1.2.3.4
# Nginx
sudo nano /etc/nginx/conf.d/blocked-ips.conf
# Remove the deny line
sudo systemctl reload nginx
```

### Adjust Rate Limits
```bash
# Edit routes/api.php
# Change: ->middleware('aggressive.throttle:10,1')
# To:     ->middleware('aggressive.throttle:20,1')
php artisan route:clear
```

---

## 🆘 Support

### Common Issues

#### "Too Many Requests" for Legitimate Users
**Solution**: Increase rate limit or whitelist their IP

```bash
# Increase limit
# Edit routes/api.php: aggressive.throttle:20,1
# Or whitelist in nginx
echo "allow 1.2.3.4;" | sudo tee -a /etc/nginx/conf.d/blocked-ips.conf
```

#### PHP-FPM Workers Still Full
**Solution**: Increase worker count

```bash
sudo nano /etc/php/8.2/fpm/pool.d/www.conf
# pm.max_children = 10  (was 5)
sudo systemctl restart php8.2-fpm
```

#### Site Slow After Deployment
**Solution**: Clear all caches

```bash
php artisan cache:clear
php artisan config:clear
php artisan route:clear
php artisan view:clear
sudo systemctl reload nginx
```

### Logs to Check

| Issue | Log File |
|-------|----------|
| Rate limiting | `/var/log/nginx/access.log` |
| PHP errors | `/var/log/php8.2-fpm.log` |
| Laravel errors | `storage/logs/laravel.log` |
| Nginx errors | `/var/log/nginx/error.log` |
| System errors | `/var/log/syslog` |

### Rollback

If something breaks:

```bash
# Remove rate limiting
# Edit routes/api.php and remove ->middleware('aggressive.throttle:10,1')
php artisan route:clear
# Remove nginx limits
sudo nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/sellzaki.com
# Comment out limit_req lines
sudo systemctl reload nginx
# Restore previous code
git log  # Find previous commit
git checkout <commit-hash>
php artisan cache:clear
```

---

## 📈 Performance Impact
